Looking east towards City Hall. Castle Street was laid out at some stage in the 10th century, and by the 18th century was one of the most vibrant streets in the city, lined with merchant houses, booksellers, painters, goldsmiths and taverns. It remained a busy thoroughfare until 1886 when the much broader Lord Edward Street opened, just to the north, further to the works of the Wide Street Commissioners.
